Professional eye examinations
Your vision is as important to us as it is to you. Our office provides
comprehensive eye examinations for both adults and children, during which we
will check your eyes inside and out for any potential eye diseases,
conditions, and refractive errors. After we meticulously evaluate your eye
health, we will discuss your results and treatment options with you. If any
treatment is necessary, such options can include medication, contact lenses,
eyeglasses, or vision therapy. Below is some information about the
state-of-the-art instruments we use to provide you with the most
comprehensive eye care available.
Information on Instrumentation
Dr. Hutchinson utilizes the most advanced instrumentation for examining your
eyes. The following instruments may be used during your eye examination:
- Automated perimeter: this instrument searches for blind spots that may
go undetected by the patient. Blind spots may be caused by a problem
with the nerves along the optic nerve pathway to the eye. Blind spots
can only be detected through this type of test.
- Autorefractor/ Keratometer: This computerized screening device
automatically measures a very close approximation of your visual
correction. It also measures the curvature of the front of your eyes.
This instrument detects visual abnormalities.
- Computer visual acuity instrument: This instrument is used to
determine how well you can see. Our test is superior to alternative
visual acuity tests because it can display different same-sized letters
and perform without adjusting the room’s light.
- Electronic refractor: This instrument is used to determine your
prescription. The instrumentation used at Pacific View Eyecare Center is
superior because it is faster, smoother, less distracting, and more
accurate, readily determining fine gradations of power.
- Fundus camera: This instrument is used to take a photograph of your
retina, located at the back of the inside of your eye. Many disease
states can be detected by examining the retina using this instrument.
- Scanning Laser Polarimetry (SLP): this specialized instrument assesses
the structure, health, and thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL).
Changes and/or damage to the RNFL and the optic nerve are the cause of
glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness. This cutting-edge technology
allows for the early detection and treatment of glaucoma, even before
symptoms of this silent sight-stealing disease develop.

Treatment of eye conditions
Dr. Hutchinson treats and manages a number of eye diseases and conditions
including dry eye, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, macular degeneration, and more.
For example, we use the scanning laser polarimetry (SLP), described above,
to assess one’s eye health for the early detection and treatment of
glaucoma. To learn more about eye diseases and treatment please visit our
section on Your Vision.
We also provide emergency services for the treatment of eye infections and
eye injuries. Our specialized microscopes help us examine the eye’s
surface and surrounding tissues for injury and infection. After a
comprehensive evaluation, we will draw up a treatment plan and fully explain
your options. Treatment for eye infections and injuries may include
prescription medications, the removal of foreign bodies from the eye,
treating corneal abrasions, and more. We will monitor your recovery through
follow-up visits as needed to ensure you get better just as soon as
possible.

Corneal Refractive Therapy (Nighttime lenses)
Corneal refractive therapy, also known as corneal molding and
orthokeratology, is a safe and effective groundbreaking alternative to
wearing glasses, contacts, or undergoing refractive surgery. With this
non-surgical therapy, a patient wears comfortable contact lenses while
sleeping, removes them in the morning and enjoys virtually perfect vision
for the following 24 to 72 hours without the need for glasses or contacts.
Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) is approved by the FDA for patients of all
ages. CRT works by naturally reshaping the cornea to allow for more perfect
vision. This treatment is most successful for patients with low to moderate
myopia (nearsightedness) with or without astigmatism. Dr. Hutchinson can
help you determine whether this treatment option is appropriate for you.
The benefits of CRT:
- Reduces your contact lens wearing time in half; this reduction may
actually be healthier for your eyes.
- CRT will not get in the way of your lifestyle, as contacts might,
since you will only wear them while you sleep.
- You do not have to deal with the possible inconveniences posed by
glasses or daytime contacts again!
- CRT is temporary and reversible, if you stop wearing them, your vision
will return to its normal state in just a few days.
- Most patients achieve optimal vision within one to two weeks. You will
begin to notice amazing results within the first few nights of
treatment.
- Lenses typically last one to three years
To learn more about the amazing benefits of CRT and to see
if this treatment is right for you, please call us at 760-753-6336 to
schedule an appointment with Dr. Hutchinson. We are more than happy to
provide you with any additional information you request about corneal
refractive therapy or any of our other services.
